Belated GSA Information

Wow, been a bit slack on getting information posted, huh? I have a good excuse though, I promise! I took on more hours this semester than I had last semester, so it makes my ability to frequently post decrease. Not to mention the fact that we’ve had quite a few events going on that have kept us all even busier.

I’ve lost quite a few of my notes from the first couple of meetings, so I have to dig through my own memory to report our activities since the spring semester started up.

Our first event was the Hypothetically Speaking Tour (Jan 31st) with Julia Carroll and Corey Houlihan as the main performers. We had Starbucks pastries and coffee free of charge for our guests, and it was truly an amazing performance. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of Folk music or spoken word (which to me converts to softer rap), and I was blown away. I ended up buying both Corey and Julia’s CDs.

The next event we held wasn’t actually an event. It was actually a few of our members volunteering to run a camp for children. February 2nd available GSA members went on their way to some place in South Carolina. Sorry, but I haven’t got the notes to know the exact place.

After that little trip, we had Mr. Bill Orberst return to FMU and give his presentation of The Biology of Sexual Orientation on February 7th. That was, by far, one of the most interesting presentations I’ve been to. It was about sexual orientation being biological, obviously. J

Right before we went to see Bill’s presentation we had a small GSA meeting with a guest speaker. Laura Sims is the Director of the Performing Arts at Francis Marion, and is a part of the Performing Arts Center that is being built in downtown Florence. She came to us and wanted our opinions on what we wanted to be done with it. Those of us that found it interesting gave her our views, and if anyone else has any idea or opinions on the new Performing Arts Center that is being built, she encourages students to contact her:

In upcoming news:

March 3rd is the kick off for the Hope Health Aids Awareness week. We'll be having a forum in prevention and awareness on that Monday. Wednesday we'll be having testing from 9am-12pm; 1:30pm-4:00pm. It's a mouth swab, so no reason to be scared. Friday is the red ball. It will be a semi-formal ball.

We'll be having another event on Homophobia Awareness. More information on that when I get more.
